The San Gabriel Valley Humanities Center’s fall program is a work-in-progress workshop on Saturday, November 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., co-sponsored by the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West. Bill Deverell of the University of Southern California will lead a discussion of “The Strange Career of the Frontier,” a new essay by Stephen Aron, President and CEO of the Autry Museum of the American West, planned as the opening chapter of The Oxford Handbook of the North American West. The program includes a tour of the San Gabriel Mission at 11:30 a.m.
Attendance is by registration only, and space is limited. Registered participants will receive a link to the draft essay. Register on Eventbrite.
This program follows a busy first year that included book talks by David Igler of UC Irvine, on All Species of Knowledge, and Peter Mancall of USC, on Contested Continent, as well as a discussion of California in the 1770s presented as part of LA250.
